Shelley has been a patent specialist since 1996, working in both New Zealand and Australia, and has been with Baldwins since 2002.  She was made a Senior Associate of the firm in 2006. 
Shelley works primarily in the areas of patents.  Her practice involves providing advice on patentability issues, drafting patent specifications, prosecuting patent applications through examination to grant, providing validity and infringement advice, and providing strategic management of intellectual property portfolios, for both the local and overseas markets.
Shelley lectures in IP in the Masters of Bioscience Enterprise programme at the University of Auckland.

Expertise

Shelley’s technical areas of expertise lie in the biotechnology arena, particularly molecular biology and genetics. Her post graduate research focused on the molecular and genetic aspects of a human neurological disorder (Adrenoleukodystrophy), resulting in the development of a diagnostic test for the disorder. Following university, Shelley conducted research at the University of Auckland Medical School. Her research focused on the cellular adhesion molecules known as “integrins” and the disease Multiple Sclerosis
