Since Ernest Smith Baldwin qualified as a patent attorney in 1891, Baldwins has been proud to play an integral part in the educational development of our young business leaders and in the advancement of New Zealand firms' research and development.

The University of Auckland
School of Biological Science:
- Lectures for the Law and IP paper (SCIENT 704) of the Masters of Bioscience Enterprise Programme are hosted by Baldwins at our Auckland office.
- Shelley Rowland, Senior Associate, is one of the lecturers.
- Attendance at an end of year function for all MBE Programme students at the School of Biological Science.
School of Law:
- Upon request, Baldwins attends and presents at career seminars at the Law School.
- Baldwins awards a prize to the top student in the Law and Information Technology paper (LAW 438). A function is held at the Baldwins Auckland office to present the student with their prize.
School of Chemistry:
- Baldwins as been involved with the IP component of the Issues in Drug Design and Development paper (CHEM 392) since its inception six years ago.
- In 2008 the lecturers were Harriet Wilson, Patent Attorney, and Sophie Thoreau, Trainee Patent Attorney.
- Baldwins awards a prize to the top achiever in CHEM 392 and hosts a function to present the prize to the student.
Engineering Postgraduate Society
- Attendance at the EPS annual poster competition for all postgraduate students in the School of Engineering.
- The poster competition is sponsored by the firm's client, UniServices.
Chiasma
- I-Volve Awards: These awards celebrate innovation and entrepreneurship in biotechnology at the University of Auckland. Harriet Wilson, Patent Attorney, was on the judging panel in 2008 and Baldwins offered a free IP consultation to the top six entrants.
- Synapse: Baldwins attended this biotech expo which features top level executives from prominent NZ biotech companies.
- Career Catalyst: Career Catalyst is a workshop designed to increase professional development of biotech students. Baldwins was invited to serve as a student mentor, providing students with first hand insight and experience into the industry. Baldwins staff members presented a seminar and team exercise on IP issues.
Victoria University of Wellington:
School of Biological Sciences
- Baldwins have been involved with the School of Biological Science for seven years and the Biotechnological Techniques and Processes (BTEC 301A) paper since its inception three years ago.
- Baldwins provide a lecturer (Jared Scarlett, Associate) for the paper and sponsor a prize for the top student.
The University of Canterbury:
- Baldwins attends the Law School Career Seminar annually at the University of Canterbury. This involves providing a speaker who gives a presentation followed by a question and answer session and networking.
The University of Otago:
- Maintenance of relationship with the School of Medical Sciences, in particular the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
- Involvement with proposed seminars at the University.
AUT:
- AUT has recently established its own Law School. Baldwins is looking to become increasingly involved in the School and are hoping to both offer lecturers and provide an award or sponsorship.
